6.5 Sales Development (SDR) Playbooks
Part of Chapter 6: Outbound Engine & Pipeline Generation in the Master Go-To-Market (GTM) & Revenue Architecture Index.
Standardized Sales Development Representative (SDR) playbooks structure discovery calls, qualification standards, and objection-handling techniques to convert prospect interest into qualified sales opportunities.
Qualification Frameworks & Objection Handling
To maximize speed-to-lead and avoid early-stage qualification friction, SDRs operate on a Minimum Viable Qualification bar (using SPICED or BANT) focused on confirming Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical Event, and Decision process parameters. SDRs do not own the Economic Buyer or Paper Process layers; their objective is validating ICP fit, confirming active pain, and securing AE meeting handoffs within strict SLA windows.
Following the SDR handoff, the Account Executive executes full enterprise discovery to validate Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Paper Process, Implied Pain, Champion, and Competition. This prevents qualification theatre at the SDR level while ensuring pipeline opportunities meet rigorous board-ready acceptance criteria.
| Qualification Dimension | SDR Minimum Viable Qualification (SQL Gate) | AE Full Deal Qualification (SQO / Opportunity Gate) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Framework | SPICED (Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical Event, Decision) or BANT. | MEDDPICC (Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria/Process, Paper Process, Pain, Champion, Competition). |
| Ownership & Scope | Validates ICP fit, business challenge/pain, trigger event, and contact authority. | Owns Economic Buyer sign-off, Paper Process clearance, Champion testing, and competitive positioning. |
| Gate Criteria & Evidence | Verified ICP profile, prospect-stated pain quote, timing driver, and confirmed discovery meeting. | Quantified ROI metrics, formal Mutual Action Plan (MAP), procurement timeline, and Economic Buyer engagement. |
| Benchmark Metrics (Bridge Group, WBD, Pavilion) | SDR-to-AE Ratio: 1:2.4; Meeting Show Rate: 75β80%; SAL Acceptance Rate: 60β75%. | SQL-to-Close-Won Conversion: 20β30%; AE Quota Attainment: ~48β50%; Pipeline Coverage: 3xβ4x. |
Acknowledge the objection, isolate the core concern (budget, timing, competitor), and pivot back to validated industry pain points using proven customer stories.
SDR Specialization & Pod Architecture
Hybrid SDR roles (handling both inbound qualification and cold outbound outreach) consistently fail because reps prioritize fast-converting inbound leads over cold outbound prospecting. Separating inbound triage (Inbound SDRs) from dedicated cold account research (Outbound BDRs) ensures consistent top-of-funnel outbound momentum.
SMB / Velocity: 1 SDR to 3β4 AEs (or pooled inbound routing).
Mid-Market: 1 SDR to 2 AEs (1:2 pod alignment).
Enterprise / ABM: 1β2 BDRs to 1 AE (dedicated 1:1 or 2:1 account coverage).
Regardless of SDR pod support, Account Executives are required to self-generate 20%β30% of their own quota pipeline through champion multi-threading, executive networking, and strategic target account expansion.
Sales Methodologies Overview
Sales methodologies define the structured approaches and tactical frameworks sales teams use during interactions with prospective buyers. Selecting and implementing the appropriate framework ensures consistent deal execution, rigorous pipeline qualification, and alignment across the buyer's purchasing lifecycle.
| Sales Methodology | Core Focus & Framework | Ideal Use Case & Application |
|---|---|---|
| MEDDPICC | Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Paper Process, Identify Pain, Champion, Competition. | Complex enterprise deals with multiple stakeholders, high ACV, and long sales cycles. |
| SPIN Selling | Situation, Problem, Implication, Need-Payoff discovery questioning techniques. | Consultative B2B discovery calls where uncovering hidden buyer pain is critical. |
| The Challenger Sale | Teach, Tailor, and Take Control by reframing buyer assumptions with commercial insights. | Markets with established incumbents where buyers are unaware of new solution paradigms. |
| Sandler Selling System | Qualifying through mutual upfront contracts, pain funneling, and budget/decision qualification. | Preventing unpaid consulting and eliminating unpromising prospects early in the funnel. |
| Solution Selling | Diagnosing specific operational needs and custom-building a bundle of products/services. | Highly configurable B2B technology platforms and service integrations. |
| Gap Selling | Quantifying the distance and business impact between the Current State and Desired Future State. | Creating urgency and justifying premium pricing based on quantified ROI gaps. |
| Consultative Selling | Acting as a trusted advisor, prioritizing active listening, and co-creating solutions. | High-trust relationship building in professional services and enterprise account management. |
| SPICED | Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical Event, Decision process alignment framework. | Fast-paced SaaS motions requiring tight handoffs across SDR, AE, and CS teams. |
| BANT | Budget, Authority, Need, Timeline baseline qualification framework. | Inbound lead triage and transactional inbound qualification filtering. |
| SNAP Selling | Simple, Invaluable, Aligned, Priority approach designed for overwhelmed prospects. | Reaching busy executive decision-makers with compressed attention spans. |
| Value-Based Selling | Focusing strictly on measurable economic outcomes and financial business cases. | CFO and procurement sign-offs where clear monetary payback must be proved. |
| Conceptual Selling | Selling the overall concept or result rather than product features or technical specs. | Early-stage executive discussions before diving into technical evaluation details. |
| Target Account Selling (TAS) | Account-centric methodology focusing on organizational dynamics, politics, and key influencers. | Strategic Account Management and Tier-1 Enterprise ABM execution strategies. |
